Do I need my dependents W2?

By James Bradley |

You cannot include your childs W2 info on your tax return. Simply claim him on your return as a dependant, as if he had no W2. Then, file a separate return for your child, but, and very important, make sure you/he checks that he can be claimed as dependant by someone else.

Do I have to claim dependents on my tax return?

When asked how many dependents should I claim?

You can claim anywhere between 0 and 3 allowances on the 2019 W4 IRS form, depending on what you’re eligible for. Generally, the more allowances you claim, the less tax will be withheld from each paycheck. The fewer allowances claimed, the larger withholding amount, which may result in a refund.

You would not enter a W-2 for a dependent on your tax return. Your dependent would enter the W-2 income on his or her own separate return. While it may not be necessary for the dependent to file a separate return, it may be beneficial if the dependent had taxes withheld and would have a refund.

When do you not have to report income on a W-2?

You do not report your dependent’s earned income from wages or from self employment on your return. If the dependent is a child under the age of 19 or a full time student under the age of 24 and has income from wages reported on a W-2 and the income reported is under $6,300, they do not have to file a federal tax return.
